Wetroom Systems:
Every wetroom lives or dies by one thing: the waterproofing beneath the tiles. Get it right and you have a shower area that stays dry, solid and mould-free for decades. Get it wrong and water finds its way into the substrate, the joists and the room below. The Substrat wetroom range is a complete, German-engineered family of tanking systems built to make that waterproofing layer fast to install, fully certified and genuinely permanent — whether you are a professional tiler tanking a walk-in wetroom every week or a self-builder waterproofing your first level-access shower.
Below we walk through every Substrat system in the range, what each one does, and where it fits in a real installation. You can browse the full collection at any time on the Substrat Wetroom Systems page.
What is a wetroom tanking system — and why it matters
“Tanking” means turning your walls and floor into a continuous waterproof tank before a single tile goes down. Tile and grout are not waterproof on their own; over time water passes straight through the grout lines. A tanking system sits between the substrate and the tile adhesive, forming an unbroken membrane that carries water safely to the drain and keeps it out of the building fabric.
A complete Substrat waterproofing installation is made up of three working parts: a membrane or liquid coating across the open field of the walls and floor, sealing tapes that bridge every wall-to-wall and wall-to-floor junction, and pre-formed corners and pipe collars that seal the awkward details where most leaks actually start. The Substrat range gives you a matched component for each of these, engineered to bond together as one certified system rather than a mix of parts that were never designed to work together.
Substrat SealCoreX — ready-mixed & rapid liquid tanking membranes
The SealCoreX range is Substrat's liquid-applied waterproofing — the “paint-on” approach that hugs every contour of the substrate and is ideal for complex floor falls and detailed areas.
The SUBSTRAT SealCoreX Ready Mixed Tanking Membrane is a single-component, ready-to-use coating — there is no measuring and no on-site mixing, you simply stir and apply by brush or roller. Once cured it forms a permanently flexible, elastic waterproof barrier that accommodates normal structural movement without cracking or de-bonding, and it bonds strongly to mineral-based surfaces. Two coats are recommended, with the second applied at right angles to the first for full, pinhole-free coverage. It is available in 6kg and 14kg tubs and, like the whole range, is manufactured in Germany to premium quality standards.
Where you need to tile sooner, the SUBSTRAT SealCoreX 2 Part Rapid Tanking Membrane is a two-component, rapid-cure coating supplied as an 8kg system. The faster cure shortens the gap between waterproofing and tiling, which is exactly what you want on a time-pressured trade job.
Substrat ButylXpress Pro — premium self-adhesive bonded membrane
If liquid coatings are the traditional route, ButylXpress Pro is the modern one. This is Substrat's premium peel-and-stick tanking system, built around a butyl rubber sealing layer bonded to a fleece carrier. The headline benefit is speed: there is no separate adhesive, no slurry coat and no drying time. You peel the release liner, press the membrane onto the substrate, and the fleece face is ready to tile straight away.
The heart of the system is the ButylXpress Pro Self-Adhesive Waterproof Tanking Membrane, supplied on a 550mm × 25m roll for full wall and floor coverage. Around it sits a full family of matching details so the whole installation stays within one certified bonded system:
-
ButylXpress Pro Self-Adhesive Waterproof Tanking Tape — fleece-faced butyl tape for sealing sheet joints and junctions.
-
ButylXpress Pro Self-Adhesive Skirting Tape — a 120mm × 10m tape made specifically for the floor-to-wall junction.
-
Internal Corners and External Corners — pre-formed peel-and-stick details that seal corners in seconds.
-
Self-Adhesive Step Corners — purpose-made for threshold-free, level-access showers.
-
Self-Adhesive Pipe Tanking Collar — stretch-fit collars that seal tightly around pipe penetrations.
Substrat ButylX Pro — butyl sealing tape system
The ButylX Pro range is the self-adhesive butyl detailing system that pairs with a liquid or sheet membrane to lock down the joints and penetrations. At its core is the ButylX Pro Tanking Tape, a fleece-faced butyl waterproofing tape available in multiple widths for sealing wall-to-floor and wall-to-wall junctions.
Complete the detailing with the pre-formed ButylX Pro Internal Corner and External Corner, and seal wall pipe penetrations with the ButylX Pro Wall Pipe Tanking Collar.
Substrat FleeceX Pro & FleeceXL Pro — fabric tanking membrane & tapes
The FleeceX Pro and FleeceXL Pro systems are Substrat's fabric-laminated tanking membranes and tapes — the workhorse for bonded, tile-over waterproofing where a fleece surface gives the tile adhesive an exceptionally strong mechanical key.
For full-field coverage, the FleeceXL Pro Fabric Tanking Membrane comes as a generous 1m × 30m roll. For the junctions, choose between the FleeceX Pro Fabric Tanking Tape (50m roll) and the wider FleeceXL Pro Fabric Tanking Tape at 120mm × 50m.
The detailing set covers every scenario a wetroom throws at you:
-
Floor Pipe Collars and Wall Pipe Collars with a built-in expansion zone for movement.
-
Double-hole pipe collars for twin feed-and-return penetrations.
-
FleeceXL Pro Step Corner Seals engineered specifically for level-access showers.
Substrat ProfiX Pro — elastic polyester sealing tape system
The ProfiX Pro system is built around a highly elastic polyester waterproofing tape, designed to absorb movement at stress points and junctions. The ProfiX Pro Fabric Tanking Tape is available in multiple widths, backed by specialist pre-formed details including the ProfiX Pro WC Toilet Expansion Zone Collar for sealing around soil pipes and the ProfiX Pro Double-Hole Pipe Collar for paired wall penetrations.
Substrat CutX Pro — aramid cut-protection system
This is the range that solves a problem most waterproofing systems ignore entirely: what happens years later, when the silicone fails. Every wetroom has silicone joints in its corners and along the wall-to-floor junction, and eventually those joints perish and need replacing. The moment someone takes a knife to rake out the old silicone, they are cutting millimetres above the tanking membrane hidden behind the tile — and it is alarmingly easy to slice straight through the waterproofing without ever knowing it. From that point the wetroom leaks silently behind a perfectly good-looking tile.
The CutX Pro range is engineered specifically to prevent this. Its aramid-reinforced construction sits over the vulnerable junctions and corners, giving the blade something it cannot cut through — so future re-siliconing and remedial work can be carried out with confidence, without ever compromising the membrane behind. It is long-life, fit-and-forget peace of mind for exactly the areas where a wetroom is most likely to be disturbed down the line. The range includes the CutX Pro Aramid Cut Protection Tape, a stainless-steel CutX Pro Protection Mesh, the heavy-duty Fleece Tanking Tape with Expansion Zone, and matching cut-protection Internal and External corners.
Substrat DecoupleX — anti-fracture decoupling membrane
Cracked tiles are almost always caused by movement transferring from the substrate into the tile. The SUBSTRAT DecoupleX Anti-Fracture Membrane is a decoupling matting, supplied on a 30m roll, that isolates the tile layer from substrate movement — protecting your finished floor from cracking over heated screeds, timber floors and other substrates prone to expansion and deflection. At just 1mm thick, it delivers all of that protection with virtually no build-up in floor height — ideal for level-access showers and doorway thresholds where every millimetre counts.
Substrat VoidFiX — void-filling & stabilising compound
Hollow spots under tiles are weak points waiting to fail — and traditionally the only fix was to lift and re-lay the whole area. The SUBSTRAT VoidFiX Pro Filling Compound changes that completely. It is a flowable compound that is injected through the grout line into the void, where it expands to fill the hollow space beneath the tile and sets to restore solid, fully-bonded support — all without lifting a single tile.
The saving is significant: instead of stripping out and replacing an entire tiled floor or wall because of a few drummy tiles, you stabilise the affected area in place for a fraction of the cost and time. It is available in 1000ml bottles and 5000ml jerry cans, and is applied precisely through the grout joint using the matching SUBSTRAT VoidFiX Syringe.
Why choose the Substrat wetroom range?
Every product in the range is manufactured in Germany to premium quality standards, and — crucially — the membranes, tapes, corners and collars are designed to work together as complete, certified waterproofing systems. That matters because a wetroom is only as waterproof as its weakest joint. Choosing a matched Substrat system rather than mixing unrelated components removes the compatibility guesswork and gives you a single, reliable waterproof barrier from drain to ceiling.
You also get a genuine choice of installation method to suit the job: fast peel-and-stick membranes (ButylXpress Pro) when you need to tile the same day, liquid-applied coatings (SealCoreX) for complex floor falls, and fabric bonded systems (FleeceX Pro) for maximum adhesion — all backed by specialist details for corners, pipes, thresholds and level-access showers.
How to choose the right Substrat system
As a quick guide: reach for ButylXpress Pro when installation speed is the priority and you want to tile immediately with no drying time. Choose SealCoreX liquid membranes when you are waterproofing intricate floor gradients or want a seamless brushed/rolled finish. Opt for FleeceX Pro / FleeceXL Pro where you want a fabric-bonded membrane with a superb adhesive key. Add CutX Pro to the silicone junctions and corners to protect the membrane from being cut through during future re-siliconing, use DecoupleX over movement-prone substrates, and keep VoidFiX on hand to rescue hollow tiles without ripping up the floor. Whichever route you take, finish every junction with the matching tapes, corners and pipe collars from the same system.

Frequently asked questions
What is tanking in a wetroom?
Tanking is the process of applying a waterproof membrane or coating to the walls and floor of a wetroom before tiling, creating a continuous barrier that stops water reaching the substrate and structure behind the tiles.
Do I need to tank a wetroom before tiling?
Yes. Tiles and grout are not waterproof on their own, so a dedicated tanking system such as the Substrat range is essential to prevent long-term water damage in any wetroom or walk-in shower.
What is the difference between a self-adhesive membrane and a liquid tanking membrane?
A self-adhesive membrane like Substrat ButylXpress Pro is a peel-and-stick sheet that can be tiled over immediately with no drying time, while a liquid membrane like Substrat SealCoreX is brushed or rolled on and needs to cure before tiling. Self-adhesive is faster; liquid conforms more easily to complex shapes and floor falls.
Are Substrat wetroom products made in Germany?
Yes, Substrat waterproofing products are manufactured in Germany to premium quality standards and are designed to work together as complete, certified wetroom tanking systems.
Can I tile directly over a Substrat tanking membrane?
Yes. The fleece-faced Substrat membranes and tapes are designed to be tiled over directly, giving tile adhesive a strong mechanical bond. Liquid SealCoreX membranes should be fully cured before tiling.
