How to Install Tiles Directly Over Old Tiles
Something we get asked frequently here at Millcot is – ‘how can I tile directly over some existing tiles I have in my bathroom?’. It’s a great question because, if you can get away with it, then tiling over existing wall or floor tiles can be a big money and time saver. There’s no need for the messy, dusty, removal of the existing tiles and the ‘elbow grease’ required to remove any old adhesive on the wall or floor left behind after the tiles have been removed. As long as the correct preparation procedure is undertaken, which we’ll cover off...
How To Tank a Wetroom
Wanting to install a wetroom? Unsure how to make sure it’s 100% waterproof? In this article we give you a very simple installation guide on how to tank a wetroom properly so that any potential future problems with water ingress are eliminated. Wetrooms are a stunning addition to any bathroom but without a dedicated shower tray like a conventional shower (which is 100% waterproof and captures and takes away most of the water) they can be problematic if not installed correctly. The most common problem is water working it’s way between the tiles, through the grout lines, and seeping into...
Tiling over plasterboard? What weight will it take?
Due to the fact we’re suppliers of tile adhesives, backer boards, movement mattings and many other tile associated tools and equipment, we often get asked about what substrates can be tiled on. The truth is – nearly all substrates are suitable to take tiling if they are properly prepared and the correct adhesive and grout is used. But, there is one key thing to take into consideration when deciding to tile over different substrates – the weight per sq metre the substrate can support without failing. Some examples of substrates commonly used on walls and commonly tiled over are shown...
What is a decoupling membrane?
A common question we get asked here at Millcot is – what is a decoupling membrane, or mat, and what does it protect against. In short, a decoupling membrane, also known as a decoupling mat, is used prior to tiling a floor if there is potential for the substrate to ‘shift’ after the tiles have been laid. Decoupling membranes come in various forms and all are designed to achieve the same level of protection against tiles cracking when the substrate becomes slightly unstable or shifts slightly. The most popular style we sell here at Millcot was originally designed by...
Fastest Way to Drill Porcelain Tiles?
A common question we get asked here at Millcot Tools – what’s the fastest way to drill porcelain tiles? There’s no real straightforward answer as porcelain is an extremely hard material which can be difficult to drill if the correct drill bits aren’t used. From our experience of selling tile drill bits for several years we’ve discovered that by far the quickest way to drill porcelain wall and floor tiles or porcelain patio slabs is by using a dry diamond hole cutter on an angle grinder. These drill diamond hole saws don’t have a pilot bit (the diamonds are brazed...
