Worked example
A floor of 20 m² laid with 600 × 600 mm tiles, 10 mm thick, with 3 mm joints:
- Consumption incl. 10% allowance 0.176 kg/m²
- Grout required for 20 m², incl. allowance 3.6 kg
- Bags to order 2 × 2 kg bags or 1 × 5 kg bag
Smaller tiles have more joints per square metre, so they use more grout: the same 20 m² in 100 × 100 mm tiles, 8 mm thick with 3 mm joints, needs about 16.9 kg including the allowance, which is 9 × 2 kg bags or 4 × 5 kg bags.

The estimate includes the 10% allowance used by Mapei’s online calculator, and the calculator does not add anything further. Actual usage varies with tile texture, joint depth and application.
Which pack sizes can I choose?
MILLCOT supplies Mapei Ultracolor Plus in 2 kg and 5 kg bags. Some colours are only stocked in one size, so only the colours available in your chosen size are offered. The calculated requirement is rounded up to whole bags of that size. Actual coverage can vary with site conditions.
What joint width should I enter?
Enter the joint width specified for your installation, as a whole number from 2 to 20 mm. The calculator estimates coverage only. It does not tell you which joint width is suitable for your tiles or substrate, so check the manufacturer’s guidance for that.
Does it work for rectangular tiles and mosaics?
Yes. Enter the length and width of a single tile, in either order. For mosaics, use the size of one individual piece rather than the sheet.
Can I use this calculator for other grouts?
No. The figures are specific to Mapei Ultracolor Plus. Other grouts have different coverage rates, so the result will not be accurate for them.
